A long time ago, I was in a personal development program that encouraged us to share the program with others. My friend's girlfriend joined the program as a result, but quickly decided to drop out. It was not an easy program. I got a lot out of it, and knew she would too if she would just stick with it. So I was frustrated she was quitting. None of us in the program could dissuade her. Seeing and hearing my obvious frustration, one of my coaches said to me:
"Life is hard; have some compassion."
Like I said, that was a long time ago, but to this day those simple words are still some of the wisest words I've ever heard. Our egos can push us to act self-righteous and judgemental to try to make us feel better about ourselves and our own shortcomings. I find myself repeatedly having to remind myself of those wise words throughout my life, and am thankful for them.
